FORGIVENESS IS THE WAY FORWARD TO TURN THE 'COIN' BACK FROM HATE TO LOVE
KUALA LUMPUR:- The preaching on Day 4 (June 9, 2018) of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus continues with the focus or reflection on Forgiveness. Fr Lawrence Ng CDD, the preacher for the five days parish feast of the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (SHC) said forgiveness is something we all want to receive, but difficult to give.
This year theme is 'Walking With The Heart of Jesus'. Fr Ng added that he has shared the last three days on Humility, Compassion and Sacrifice; and today on Forgiveness.
'Forgiving people who wronged us, is difficult to forgive. How can you forgive someone who broke your heart or hurt someone you love?' Fr Ng shared about his brother who borrowed from loan shark and has a debt to settle, affecting all in his family. His brother refuses to come back to solve and said don't recognize his parents. Fr Ng felt hurt, yet he forgives his brother and pray one day he will come back to the family.
"Thankfully we have the perfect example of forgiveness in Jesus who while in agony on the Cross said Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they doing", Fr Ng said.
Jesus makes it clear that forgiveness is paramount importance. Love comes first, and behind is forgiveness.
The Religious priest quoted from John 15:12,15 & 13:35. "Jesus wants us to love one another as He has loved us. So that people will know us that we are His disciples, is by the love that we have for one another", added Fr Ng.
He gave an example, say after Mass. Do we show love for one another or foul words when our car is blocked?
Fr Ng went on to say we can be disciples of Christ in Church, but must show life and forgiveness to others outside. Our love is imperfect, our heart is not perfect love. When we sin, we destroy our relationships with God and neighbour. Forgiveness is the way to turn the coin (which has both sides) back from hate to love.
Making further clarifications, Fr Ng told the assembly the seven Bible verses of Jesus teaching on forgiveness.Namely:-
Matthew 5:23-24. Put your offering aside and go make peace with your brother first, before returning to give your offering.
Matthew 6:14-15. If you don't forgive, your Father don't forgive yours.
Matthews 18:21-22. Forgive 77 times your brother or sister who wrong you. Always forgive others.
Luke 6:37. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Jesus tells us don't condemn others.
Luke 17:3-4. Forgive him, your brother if he is sorry. Thought it is not easy to forgive, but possible with God.
Luke 23:33-34. On the Cross Jesus said 'Father, forgive them for they do not know what they do'. Forgiveness in our lives, in our
John 8:7. Let anyone among you who has no sin, be the first to throw a stone at her. Fr Ng said who is the one who leave the place; it's the elders because they understand.
The preacher who is based in Church of St Ignatius in Kelana Jaya said Jesus is calling you to forgive. Maybe you have 2 or 3 persons you really hate, ask Jesus to put His Heart in you to forgive. Can you do that in today's Mass?
Going further, Fr Ng said our church has Sacrament of Reconciliation. But some do not want to go for confession because we don't like the priest. But God is there for us. God always forgives because He is a loving God.
Fr Ng invited the assembly to go inside your heart and change, be like the Heart of Jesus. Let the Holy Spirit burn or fire up your heart to become disciples who forgives. He added that tomorrow will focus on Witness.
In ending his homily, Fr Ng shown a video clip by Matthew West, on Forgiveness. He invited all to listen.
As for the Tamil speaking parishioners, they assembled in Dewan Louis Guittat at the same time for the Liturgy of Word in Tamil, by SHC parish priest Fr Edwin Peter, including the homily preached by P. Deacon Sandnasamy Peter from Ipoh, before all adjourned into the Church to join the rest, for the Eucharist celebration.
After Mass, the assembly with the clergy walked in solemn procession where the icon of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on a float was taken into the 30 minutes long procession along Jalan Peel, before returning back into the church for the Benediction.
Fr Edwin in his speech thanked Fr Ng being the main preacher for this year parish feast and P.Deacon Sandnasamy; and all those involved. He also expressed his thanks to everyone who came in good numbers to participate in the celebrations. Fr Edwin invited all to join in the dinner fellowship held in Dewan Louis Guittat and in the parish courtyard. Book-markers with the feast theme, in conjunction to this year's parish feast, were also distributed to all.
